Did you know that in the UAE, Muslims can marry online? Yes, they do, provided one of the spouses is physically present in the country. However, the specific rules and requirements may apply and there are distinct regulations for Muslims by birth and those who have converted to Islam, with converted individuals required to sign a list of declarations before the marriage can proceed.

Additionally, the purpose of the marriage can influence the process. For instance, some countries do not accept online marriages for residency applications, requiring a Shariah marriage to be conducted instead. The location of the marriage also depends on the visa holder’s emirate—if a person holds a visa for Dubai, the marriage application must be made in Dubai; similarly, Abu Dhabi visa holders must apply in Abu Dhabi.

Furthermore, certain prerequisites must be met before the marriage can be conducted. The bride must obtain an approval letter from her father or legal guardian, with different criteria for converted brides. If the bride has been previously married, she must provide a divorce certificate or the death certificate of her former husband. Both parties are required to undergo medical checks, including tests for sexually transmitted diseases. All documents, such as passports, ID cards, and certificates, must be in Arabic and attested by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the respective countries. Additionally, a marriage counselling session is mandatory before the marriage.
